Welcome to Weegee: Exhibit features work of famed photojournalist

This Arthur "Weegee" Fellig photo, "Movie Ecstasy - The Kiss," is from 1943 and part of the Alan and Ellen Newberg Collection, part of which in now on display at the UO's White Box gallery in Portland.

This past term in Photojournalism at LBCC one of the curiosities for students was the work of Arthur Fellig, better known as Weegee.

Fellig’s work during the 1930s and ’40s is characterized mostly by his sordid crime photos, including many murder scenes, often shot only moments after the deed had been done.  His black-and-whites also captured many other moments of life on the streets and around New York City.

Fans and curious visitors alike have a rare opportunity to look over a collection of Weegee’s work this month in Portland.  Twenty-one of his photos are on display at the University of Oregon’s downtown White Box gallery at 70 N.W. Couch St.  The free exhibit is open from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and runs through July 30.

The Oregonian published a review of the exhibit, which sounds like it’s worth the trip.
