About Rob

Welcome to this new-and-improving version of Rob’s Media Blog, which got its start as part of my work as the journalism instructor at Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, Ore.  Throughout the year I teach Media & Society, News Reporting, Feature Writing and Photojournalism, along with advising LBCC’s campus newspaper, The Commuter.

My background includes more than 20 years at the Corvallis Gazette-Times. Besides serving for nine years as managing editor, I had stints as a reporter, copy editor and Opinion page editor. I’ve written news, feature and sports stories, along with taking photos and designing news pages.

I serve on the advisory board for the New Media Communications program at Oregon State University, as well as the Campaign Committee of the Benton County Historical Society, which is looking to build a new museum in downtown Corvallis.

My journalism training began at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where I earned a degree in mass communication-journalism and English. I did an internship at the Milwaukee Journal (now the Journal Sentinel) and a fellowship at Arizona Newspapers, which includes the Arizona Republic.

Finally, I have an MBA from Willamette University in Salem. In addition to media, my expertise includes public relations, marketing, management and strategic planning.

  1. Your blog looks great Rob. Thanks for sharing it with the class. I see you were going to see “dispicable me.” What did you think?

    • “Despicable Me”: Not a bad night of entertainment. Wished I had seen it in 3D, though, as it made better use of special effects than “Toy Story 3.” My son and his friend liked it; I thought it was cute. Thanks for asking.
